Gimme Some Sugar: Classic Candy Arrives at IU Tripp in Oak Hill
At IU Tripp in Oak Hill, antique shopping just got a little sweeter. The colorful shop now sells 10-cent classic candies, like Necco Wafers, Kits, B-B-Bats, and Squirrel Nut Zippers, plus hand-made barley sugar hard candy and spicy-sweet cinnamon cube pops.
With plants out front and popping up in the front windows, IU Tripp is ready for spring.
Classic candy in an vintage wire side jar makes the perfect road trip snack for an antique hunter with a sweet tooth.
Barley sugar lollipops and a giant reindeer hard candy glow under the shop's antique lamps. The bright-colored candies were hand-made in Victorian molds by Melville Candy.
Jawbreakers are the perfect treat if you aren't too attached to your teeth. Ha! Actually, Archer lost his teeth a couple of weeks ago and is just standing next to the jar for scale. In his words, the jawbreakers are "ginormous."
IU Tripp's front table display combines candy, antiques, and some mint-condition vintage clothing, a.k.a. "deadstock," a term for merchandise that was never sold or used.
I picked up a bunch of candy for my kids, and Chris, a partner in the IU Tripp family business, gifted me this cinnamon lollipop. (Thanks again, Chris!) He explained that lollipops were originally cube-shaped. In the old days, the mixture was poured into trays, loaded with sticks, cooled, and cut into squares. With a strong and spicy cinnamon flavor, these are definitely grown-up lollies.
